Location: Mexico

Our expeditions run from a dedicated and fully equipped research station in the heart of the Chamela-Cuixmala biosphere reserve in Jalisco, Mexico.

The reserve spans 8 geographic sectors over 13,142 hectares incorporating tropical deciduous forest, mangroves, palm clusters, manzanillera forest and stunning coastline with a number of important uninhabited islands that are home to colonies of tropical sea birds such as the brown booby, Sula leucogaster.

The flora and fauna is amazingly diverse incorporating stunning orchids, a high diversity of bird species and a number of endangered animal species including:
  • American crocodile (Crocodilus acutus)
  • Mexican beaded lizard, (Heloderma horridum)
  • Jaguar (Panthera onca)
  • Sea turtles: including green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
  • The Peccary (Tayassu tajacu)
  • Puma (Puma concolor)
  • Boa (Boa constrictor)

The reserve sustains 1,149 plant species, 270 bird species, 72 species of mammals and 68 species of reptiles.

The entire zone is administered by the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP). Despite this, the area is listed as vulnerable.

The overall objective of this project is to promote the conservation of species and ecosystems through a multi-discipline research and educational program. This is being achieved by conducting a number of different, but interlinked projects that will give students (you!) the opportunity to work on a range of biological topics and conservation issues, whilst gaining real hands-on experience.
